Adopt From Us
The Dachshund Haven is purely a foster-based organisation, and so all of our dogs are placed in the comfort of our foster's homes throughout Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
If you have seen a dog in particular that you would like to apply for, their allocated number can be used on the application or the team can assist in matching who we believe to be best suited to your family dynamics.

Step 1: The application
Download the Adoption Application as a Word document, populate the document with as much information as possible so that we can get a good understanding of you and your home, and then email it to adoptions@TheDachshundHaven.co.za.

Step 2: The home inspection
In the event your application is approved, The Dachshund Haven will be in touch with you and a representative will be appointed to conduct a home inspection at a time convenient to both parties.

Step 3: Finding your match
Should your home check be successful we will either finalise the adoption process with the dog you have shown interest in or the team will guide you in choosing your new family member who we believe will be most suited to your family dynamics.
FAQs
How long does the application process take?
This does vary, but we try and expedite the process as much as possible. Once we have your application, we commit to providing a response in no longer than 4 days. If your application has been approved, it then depends on when both you and our representative conducting the home check are able to meet.
Once we have the home check documentation from our representative, we'll be in touch within a few days to confirm how we proceed.
Can I visit the dogs before applying?
Only once we have a successful application and an approved home check do we allow for meet and greets to happen.
This is purely because our dachshunds are in foster homes and it requires some planning to orchestrate the meeting - this way, we save everyone's time and ensure that only approved applicants are meeting their potential new family member.
Any homing requirements I need to know about?
We always consider safety and suitability of the home throughout the application process, which means we need to have a few boxes checked before we'd be able to proceed from an application and into a home check.
These requirements include:
-
Unless the dog in our care needs to be an only dog, or they are a senior, having existing dogs is required to ensure that the dog you are looking at adopting has a friend. This is an absolute must as dachshund's are prone to separation anxiety and generally do better when they have canine companionship. If you do not have any existing dogs, then you'd need to be open to adopting two.
-
No access to the driveway or vehicles. This needs to be completely restricted, ensuring that the dogs are kept out of harm's way.
-
No open pool. If you do have an open pool, we require that some form of security is installed. This could be in the form of a fence, a net, a solid cover, and/or a Pet Pool Buddi.
-
Good quality food being fed with a schedule of twice per day.
-
Your existing dogs need to be sterilised and fully vaccinated.
What happens if my application is declined?
The dedicated team at The Dachshund Haven will work closely with you to provide thoughtful suggestions on how to enhance your home and ensure it meets our specific homing requirements for the well-being of our dachshunds.
