Foster For Us

The Dachshund Haven is purely a foster-based organisation, where all of our dogs are placed in the comfort of our foster's homes until they get adopted. Without our fosters, it would not be possible for us to do what we do.

If you're interested in joining our foster network, PLEASE get in touch. We’d be happy to share the in's and out's of how you can become a foster.

Step 1: The application

Download the Foster Application as a Word document, populate the document with as much information as possible so that we can get a better understanding of you and your home, and then email it to adoptions@TheDachshundHaven.co.za.

Step 2: The home inspection

In the event your application is approved, The Dachshund Haven will be in touch with you and a representative will be appointed to conduct a home inspection at a time convenient to both parties.

Step 3: Placing a foster

On an approved home check, and once the documentation and has been completed, we'll add you to our foster network and get you ready to foster a dachshund best suited to your family dynamics.

FAQs

How long do you foster a dog for?

We do not rush the homing of our dachshunds, and ensure that they go to the best possible home for them. This means that there is no timeline on how long a dachshund might stay in a foster's care - some take a few weeks and others can take up to a year or more. We always believe that the right home is out there.

Who covers the food and medical expenses?

We cover all medical costs and provide the needed support.

We provide food, if required, but we find that many of our fosters cater for the dachshunds themselves, as they fit in with the foster's routine.

Any homing requirements I need to know about?

We always consider safety and suitability of the home throughout the application process, which means we need to have a few boxes checked before we'd be able to proceed from an application and into a home check.

These requirements include:

  1. No access to the driveway or vehicles. This needs to be completely restricted, ensuring that the dogs are kept out of harm's way.

  2. No open pool. If you do have an open pool, we require that some form of security is installed. This could be in the form of a fence, a net, a solid cover, and/or a Pet Pool Buddi

  3. Good quality food being fed with a schedule of twice per day.

  4. Your existing dogs need to be sterilised and fully vaccinated.

What else can foster's help with?

In addition to providing a loving foster home until the dog gets adopted, we'll also request home checks for potential adopters which you can assist with if it is in your area.

Apart from this, the rest is up to The Dachshund Haven management team, who is responsible for driving the adoptions and ensuring that the right home is found for your foster dog.

Once we have the right home and a successful adoption with all of the necessary paperwork in place, we will advise you of the adoption so that arrangements can be made for the adopters to get their dog.
